Drum Therapy is a fun activity which will have you smiling while you enjoy some music and get a great brain and body workout at the same time!
Drum therapy accesses the entire brain and can synchronise both sides of the brain. There are auditory and motor functions needed for rhythm and the brain is stimulated in ways which provide neurological benefits for many conditions.
Among the patients who benefit are those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia, ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, Chronic Pain, Autism, Depression, PTSD and other mental illnesses. Children with learning difficulties, as well as all seniors, and anyone who wants to improve brain function can benefit
Because drumming is a very physical activity, Drum Therapy provides a cardio workout as well. To get this physical output while sitting down is a great help to seniors and others with mobility issues.
There is already good research, and more being done, to examine the benefits to patients of participating in Drum Therapy.
What we already know is that participant’s experience:
• Confidence raising and improved mood
• An easing of chronic pain
• Improvements in coordination
• Improved problem solving
• Improved learning
• Greater dexterity
• Better concentration
• Improvements in Communication
• Better social interaction
• Enhanced self-expression
Drum Therapy can promote feelings of well-being and alleviate stress. This makes Drum Therapy useful for depressed patients and for those suffering from stress or other mental health issues.
The benefits of Drum Therapy are experienced differently depending on the participant’s condition. For example, with Alzheimer’s patients, the following benefits have been observed:
• An improvement in mood
• Better self-expression
• Stimulation of speech
• Organisation of mental processes
• Sensory stimulation
• Motor integration
In Alzheimer’s patients Drum Therapy may:
•Reduce the need for some medication
•Arrest the deterioration in brain function
For other participants, the benefits of Drum Therapy can be seen in improvements in daily life.
CHILDREN
The improved concentration for children leads to better learning outcomes, greater confidence, improved interaction with peers and teachers.
PTSD
Drum Therapy can promote feelings of well-being and alleviate stress. This makes Drum Therapy useful for depressed patients and for those suffering from stress or other mental health issues.
IMMUNE SYSTEM
Improvements in the immune system can also be seen when the alleviation of stress allows the body to restore compromised immunity.
IN SUMMARY
Drum Therapy is a unique activity which combines cognitive and physical treatments. The many benefits transfer to the enhancement of daily life, and every Drum Therapy session is essentially fun.
Participants need only an inflatable exercise ball and a pair of drum sticks. The ball is placed in front of the seated person and between the knees. The “bounce” provided by the exercise ball when hit with drum sticks simulates the feel of hitting a drum.
With James’s expert guidance, participants learn the many patterns and rudiments of real drumming. Having mastered a pattern, they can then play along to music which uses that rhythm. The result is always smiling faces, the enjoyment of music and fun challenges. The results will be individual, but a good time is the common experience.
James McCrone is a professional musician with a degree in Contemporary Music Performance. James has a special interest in the Mental Health area and in what Drum Therapy can achieve for sufferers. He has also had success with children suffering autism and is keen to take Drum Therapy wherever people can be enriched by its benefits.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, class sizes range between 3-13 people depending on the space available.
A normal class is 1 hour long with a few quick breaks along the way.
No you do not. The majority of people have never held a drum stick.
I have many different classes ( see private party/ corporate event section) but your general drum therapy class is made up of Pop - Classic Rock.
The only things you'll need is a water bottle and a towel. Everything else you'll need I will provide for you.
Once a minimum class size is achieved, $10-$15 per head is the price point depending on venue hiring costs.
A drum therapy class is a de-stressing, team building, endorphin generating hour of fun. Perfect for expelling the tensions created by a busy working life or something different to do outside of the usual party games.
While not every song is suitable for a class, I can design a class based on a pool of songs selected by yourselves.
There is an extra charge for this service to cover the time it takes me to create the class.
Choose your favorite decade from the 60's to present for a trip down memory lane.
An hour of big riffing, heavy hitting, head banging craziness. Your arms may fall off but it's a lot of fun.
Gotta respect the classics, man.
This class is for kids 5-12 years old. It is comprised of songs from Disney movies and soundtracks.
